Most lodges with inclusive activities offer a guided visit to Sesriem Canyon, although in truth it is very easy to visit yourself if you are on a self-drive itinerary. This long, narrow fissure, up to 25 metres deep in places, can be rather underwhelming at times, although it is of historical interest because this is where early settlers used.

Sesriem Canyon, located in the vast Namib Naukluft Park in central Namibia, was cut by the Tsauchab River, the same river that feeds Sossusvlei in times of heavy rain. The name of Sesriem is taken from the canyon, early pioneers who came to the area and wanted to get water from the canyon had to tie six leather thongs to the handle of their 78%(8).

Jul 14,  · After traveling to the dunes it was a last minute decision to go to the canyon. Upon arriving it did not look much at all and we wondered whether or not to walk down into the canyon. So glad we did and it was one of the highlights of our trip. This canyon and the history associated with it make it a must see if you are in the area. Far more impressive than the dunes in my humble opinion

Sesriem Canyon. The Tsauchab River has shaped the Sesriem Canyon over millions of years. It is one of the few places in this area that holds water all year round. The early Afrikaans explorers named the canyon after the fact that they had to use six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) tied together to create a rope long enough to lower.

A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides. “Canyon” comes from the Spanish word cañon, which means “tube” or “pipe.”The term “gorge” is often used to mean “canyon,” but a gorge is almost always steeper and narrower than a canyon. The movement of rivers, the processes of weathering and erosion, and tectonic activity create canyons.

Though a short technical section, the canyon and exit make this a highly recommended trip. Be sure to check the flow of Muddy Creek before starting this route. In early spring it can be quite high, making the exit hike difficult. If doing the route in the summer, get an early start to beat the heat and be in the narrows before the heat of the day.
